Peniscola is a fortified seaport on the Costa Del Azahar. It is sometimes called the 'Gibraltar of Valencia' and was used in the filming of El Cid (1961) played by Charlton Heston. The castle was originally built by the Knights Templar in the 14th century and later occupied by Pedro de Luna – Pope Benedict XIII. Nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction enjoyed by many visitors and with temperatures that ensure that winter rarely sees below double figures and soars to over 30°C in the summer, it is enjoyed all the year round.

There are a couple of fine-sanded beaches stretching over a large area. The North Beach is the most popular at 5km long. It is lulled by a tranquil stretch of the sea and has access to wheelchair users. The peaceful waters allow for safe swimming and are serviced by lifeguards to ensure the safety of their visitors. The resting sunbathers, the sporting volleyball players and those canoeing or sailing merge together in relative serenity. The pristine condition of the beaches also pays visual homage to the prestigious award – The Blue Flag given to those beaches not only for its cleanliness but also for the effort made towards the environment. The south side gives way to a steeper and rockier coastline with more private beach areas and isolated coves. A palm tree-lined promenade stretches around its promontory offering the walker a bird's-eye view.

Besides the film commemorating one of Valencia's conquistadors, Peniscola also hosts films of another nature. Every year there is a festival that celebrates Spanish and foreign comedian actors and filmmakers. This city was not only used as the backdrop of El Cid but also the comedic masterpiece Calabuch by Luis Berlanga. Walk around this city reliving the drama and humour that has been played out here: the port, the castle and its ramparts.

Shopping is well provisioned too, and there are specialist shops, which display works of art, antiquities, jewellery, pottery and textiles. Excellent for filling in that gift list with that little something special. There are also the usual shops and supermarkets that will provide you with the everyday essentials. Bars and restaurants light up the evening and provide excellent cuisine. Fish brought in from the trawlers in the early evening provide that exquisite dish at its freshest that lavish the palate of the expectant gourmets.
