Mojacar is located in the region of Almeria. It is an enchanting town that still retains some of its Moorish ancestry, which heavily influenced the area until the might of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella's armies conquered them in the 15th century. Four thousand years have also seen the civilisations of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. The towering Sierra Cabrera Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea play powerful backdrops to what is considered one of the most alluringly located towns in this part of Almeria. Every summer the locals dress up in costumes that reflect the Moors and Christians period of history and engage in mock battles to honour their predecessors.
The white-washed houses, courtyards and cobbled alleyways are a not just a favourite for tourists to amble through leisurely but also a favoured site for artists and is home to the Fundacion Valparaíso - an international artists colony. Undoubtedly, the fresh spring water Roman Fountain and the unusual church of Santa Maria have been painted many times. Also look out for the Mojacar Man – a magical totem that brings protection and good luck, previously painted on the fronts of houses to protect the resident within from storms.
A short distance away – a mere 2km, the contrast between town and beach changes. The coastal area is more modern, designed to engage and entertain the tourist. There is a generous 5km stretch of beautiful dark sand. Some curve close to the promenade whilst others are more remote offering privacy to the more reserved bather. There are excellent facilities, and efforts are made to ensure the hygiene and security of all beach visiting tourists. Water sports are plentiful such as sailing, wind surfing, canoeing and water-skiing. Diving is a particular favourite pastime here, and there are a few clubs willing to help instruct the enthusiast. There are more relaxing sports to partake in too, a game of golf or bowls, or you can try your hand at reeling in some of the elusive fish in the Mediterranean. If you want to mini-emulate one of the famous Grand Prix drivers then there is also Quad Trekking or Karting. For those who want to tour this area this can either be done on your own two feet or mounted on horseback.
The nearest airport to Almeria is about 50 miles away and as the route to Mojacar is mostly dual carriageway this will take approximately the same time in minutes. Affordable shuttle services are also provided at the airport and you can book either of these in advance. Which is highly recommended as it may save you the hassle of hidden expenses or delays. Rental desks are provided at the airport but be aware of when you arrive there. Taxis are nearly always ready outside the airport but the availability can vary depending on the season or the time of day.
