The department of Loire-Atlantique is located on the west coast of France, and is named after the river that flows through it and also the ocean that it borders. The area is known for its historic towns, such as Nantes, picturesque villages as well as spectacular natural scenery and beaches.
Nantes
The town of Nantes was the historic capital of Brittany and features examples of architecture from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The oldest buildings include the Gothic cathedral and castle, as well as the medieval ramparts protecting the town, which are still mostly in one piece. The timber-framed houses of the Bouffay district were built in the 18th century for the rich merchants, while the 19th century Passage Pomeraye is a beautiful shopping arcade that has changed little since it was first built. Visitors can enjoy wandering the historic streets as well as the parks and gardens, including the Japanese Gardens and a large Botanic Garden, featuring examples of local and specialist plants. The famous author Jules Verne came from the town of Nantes and there is a museum dedicated to his life and works in the centre.
Historic villages
The Loire-Atlantique area is well known for its cute thatched cottages, including 18 in the village of Kerhinet alone. The village also features a museum dedicated to the art of thatching and visitors will enjoy exploring the nearby Briere National Park, which is home to another 3,000 examples of thatch. The village is especially peaceful, as no cars are allowed on its streets. The nearby medieval towns of Guerande and Clisson are also worth a visit, for their medieval castles, ramparts and bridges. Guerande hosts outdoor organ concerts on summer evenings too.
Atlantic coast
There are two distinct parts to the Loire-Atlantique coast; the Jade Coast is lined with sandy beaches and small holiday resorts while the Savage Coast is a little less welcoming, but very beautiful. The resorts on the Jade Coast include Pornic, with a long stretch of sand and its own medieval castle, it has long been a popular holiday destination with residents of Nantes. Meanwhile, the stretch of coast between Poulignon and Le Croisic is one large, towering cliff, with caves and viewpoints to explore on your route. Le Croisic itself is a traditional fishing village, still with a working harbour and an impressive Gothic church.
