Lanzarote is the most eastern of the Canary Islands and offers a host of activities in a moderate climate that rarely falls below 17°C in the coolest months to the warmest of 29°C in the peak season. The island offers a host of activities from surfing, sailing, sunbathing, cycling and trekking from silky white or glittering desert sanded beaches to volcanic tinted hues of red and copper coloured caves, mounds and rocks. In the evening the heart of the capital Arrecife beats to the requirements of its late night revellers relaxing on their hard-earned vacation.
As mentioned above, the beaches can differ in colour and landscape, this variety can offer even the most particular sun-worshipper a place they can relax in warming leisure. The coastline also offers water sports such as sailing, surfing and diving. The reefs and the winds help create some of the best surfing environments in Europe with many coming here in the winter to train. The volcanic diversity also makes the coral bed rich with varieties of botanical life and schools of many varieties of fish: An estimable treasure for the diver to see or for the angler baiting for a reel find.
The island also offers golf, cycling and trekking. There are a couple of excellent courses set in stunning surroundings. Or you can trek into the off-planet looking landscape of the volcanic areas. The original inhabitants called Lanzarote 'the coloured hills' and this portrays itself when the light catches a protruding rock or when you are travelling through the longest volcanic tunnel of Atlantida: the majesty of what helped Cesar Manrique, an artist who resided here, to become world renown. A visit to the national park of Timanfaya - an island constructed solely by past eruptions offers a variety of nearly 180 plant species, could be worth a day visit to the enthusing geologist or botanist. Besides cycling or travelling on foot, camel excursions can also help you to visit the volcanoes in true nomadic style.
Food generally reflects the cultural background; wild and reared goat and rabbit appear frequently on menus. Fish caught from the seas and beef imported from South America. This side of the Americas also provides influence on local cuisine, as well as the North African proximity playing a substantial part to the tastes of the area. Integrate this into Spanish delicacies washed down with a local Malvaisa wine and gastronomically you will be left a souvenir to savour.
There is excellent provision for transfers from Lanzarote airport. Shuttle services and taxis will take you to your final destination. Or you can take the flexible option of hiring a car from the airport. It is possible to book your shuttle service in advance and often it is possible to do this for your car hire. Check whilst you are booking your flight ticket.
