Huelva is significant, not only to European history, but also to the Americas. As this city and its surrounding villages was the pivotal point for one of the greatest discoverers, none other than Christopher Columbus. He stayed here, prayed here and collected his crew before setting off. There are many monuments that celebrate its heritage, including one dedicated to Cristobal Colon, the name that the Spanish gave the founder of the New World.

Huelva lies at the mouth of two rivers with the Aracena and Morena mountain range strutting resiliently in the background. The rich mineral deposits have attracted the early Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, and later the British who bought out the copper mines. Besides the mines bringing wealth to Huelva, fishing, agriculture and especially 20th century tourism has provided significantly too. Imbibe that with the Christian and Moorish influences that have enriched the history of Huelva then you may already have a taste of what to expect.

Huelva has probably some of the most unspoilt beaches in the whole of Spain. It enjoys hot summers and very mild winters with average temperatures ranging from 16-18ºC, depending from mountain to coast. The 120 km coastline is dotted with white sanded beaches interlaced with fishing ports to the dunes of the Donana National Park. There is layer upon layer of flora and fauna to discover here. The Spanish Imperial Eagle as well as other birds of prey soar high in the skies. Geese, partridges, ducks, egrets and storks litter the trees and various habitats: streams, mudflats and reed beds. From the heights of the flight-worthy to those deep of the earth, it teems with life vying for coexistence.

It is hardly surprising that the main sports here tend to take in the natural beauty that Huelva is blessed with. Rambling and cycling are regularly enjoyed. Though if you want to take in more and various other sports then a visit to Punta Umbria in the same province is well worth a visit. It offers windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing and canoeing and if you want to practise your swing then a game of golf can be played in one of their challenging and scenic courses.

The best airport to fly to in Spain would have to be the one in Seville. It is Spain’s second biggest international airport behind Malaga. Due to this it would be better placed to provide a good bargain. An affordable and interesting way to get to Huelva from Seville would be to take the RENFE train which can be pre-booked. They take approximately just over one and a half hours to get there.
