Guardamar del Segura is steeped in history. There are remains that predate to the Neolithic period. Phoenician fortifications supported a harbour that was a significant trading route. Roman occupation built upon the trading as well as fishing and salting. Religion seared the cultural landscape with settlements by Moorish and Christian alike.
In the medieval period the town had been burnt down twice and in 1889 the town was destroyed by an earthquake. Though like the phoenix, the town has been reborn, redesigned and recreated. La Pinada, a huge swathe of pine trees intermingled with other types of flora were planted to prevent the sands being swept into the town and it is now designated as a place of natural interest. The parks, the Reina Sofia and Alfonso XIII, ideally symbolise this and often attract ramblers and cyclists. Later a canal, stretching all the way to the fields of Elche, was also built to provide much needed irrigation.
The 12 km of Costa Blanca fine white sands are well looked after by this historic town. They are designated the prestigious blue flag for cleanliness and environmental friendliness. They also ensure the safety of their bathers, especially during the peak season, with lifeguards posted on look outs. The temperatures fall to a cooling 11ºC in the colder periods of winter to a sizzling 27ºC in the August summer. As for many places in Spain, the rainfall is fairly uncommon.
There are many sports in Guardamar to occupy the more adventurous: windsurfing, water skiing, paragliding and diving. If you want something more peaceful you could drop a rod off the edge of a boat to catch that elusive fish that just gets bigger and bigger. Or finish on the 19th hole after a breath taking scenic and challenging course at one of the estimable golf clubs in the nearby area. There is also the Municipal Sports Centre that hosts an Olympic swimming pool, three football pitches and courts for tennis, basketball and other pelota.
There is a shuttle service that operates from Alicante airport to Guardamar del Segura and takes approximately 50 minutes. It is reasonably priced. If you are planning on taking in some golf or want to trek around Guardamar, you should consider hiring a car. Shuttles and hire cars can be arranged at the same time as booking your flight ticket. There are also desks at the airport to hire a car too.
Guardamar derives most of its income from tourism so is especially considerate towards catering for all of its visitors. This applies to almost everything, the bars, restaurants, nightlife and shopping provisions. Cosmopolitan in nature with the historical pillars of tradition supporting it.
