The village of Gaucin starts from the foot of Castillo del Aquila and stretches to the slopes of mount Hacho on the Serrania de Ronda mountain range. As you wind up the road, the scenery pleasantly changes in colour and tone from the green of ashes and willows to evergreens and cork. The fruit of citrus and plums give way to nut-laden trees and shrubs. This historic town dates back to Roman times and the magnificent castle Castillo del Aquila (Eagle's Castle) testifies to this. Its name Gaucin roughly translated means strong rock. From its highest point it is possible to see Gibraltar and the North African mountains across the sea.

Gaucin still holds it’s much sought for Andalucian style of life. The narrow winding streets, the weathering of ancient architecture, the smells and tastes are all evident to its traditional values. Tastes are predominantly local too and with a lot of the products being locally sourced, it is no surprise that their restaurants receive many flattering reviews. There are a significant amount of restaurants that serve traditional food and cater for the Mediterranean palate. Though there are others that are ready to pamper for other international visitors culinary expectations.

Gaucin is a relaxing place and its activities reflect this. There are riding schools nearby for trekking. Or you can go on foot on guided tours, nature trails and bird watching. The Castello del Aquila actually means Eagle Castle and this is perfectly reflected in the amount of birds like the eagle and the kestrel that soar and hover nearby. There are many artists that live in Gaucin that have a natural landscape to draw from. Its diverse beauty ensures they will never run out imagination. There is a local recording studio too.

If you need more sports such as golf and taking to the water then you will need good transport. Strongly recommended would be to hire a car from Malaga airport. Taxis and Shuttle services are available from here too and they would be fine if you intend to spend most of your holiday in Gaucin itself. Though if you want the flexibility of relaxation and active adventure then it would make this more accessible. Transfers and hiring a car can be booked at the same time as buying your flight tickets.
