The department of Eure, named after the river that flows through the area, is part of the old region in Normandy, located in northern France. Eure is known for its historic towns, castles and buildings, including the family home of the painter Claude Monet and the cathedral city of Evreux. There are still many unspoilt areas in Eure, with plenty of hiking routes through forests or alongside canals, allowing visitors to discover typical Normandy villages, complete with thatched cottages and half-timbered buildings.

Evreux

The capital of the region is the medieval city of Evreux with its unspoilt old town and ramparts, which still offer a pleasant route around the town and a good view over the surrounding countryside. During the summer months, there are a number of festivals and events held in Evreux, including a music festival at the end of June and throughout July and August heritage days, exploring the history of the region from Roman times to the Second World War, complete with re-enactments and actors in costume. The star attraction, however, is the 13th century cathedral, with its spectacular examples of stained glass windows. You can always stretch your legs with a walk along the network of canals that supply the town and the surrounding villages.

Near to Evreux is the Château Gaillard, the ruins of the stronghold of Richard the Lionheart, on a hill overlooking the River Seine. The inner castle is still standing and can be visited during the summer months, though it is worth the climb to the top all year round to appreciate the commanding position of the fortress and to explore the still-standing walls.

Giverny and Monet

The famous impressionist painter Claude Monet lived in the town of Giverny from 1883 to 1926 and it was here that he painted some of his most well-known works, including the Water Lilies. The town has no shortage of Monet themed attractions, from museums to gardens, but there are other reasons to visit Giverny too. There is an excellent art gallery in the town, featuring a fine collection of 19th and 20th century artworks.

Monet fans will not be disappointed by the gardens, which are dramatically different depending on the time of year that you visit. They are planted the same way that Monet left them planted and most were designed specifically with quality of light in mind, in order to achieve an intimate atmosphere in his paintings of nature. You can also visit the former Monet family home, which is now a museum dedicated not only to his life and career, but has information about the impressionist movement in general.
