Named after the Aveyron River, Aveyron is situated in southern France, southwest of the Massif Central. It is famous for its world-class meadows filled with unique flowers, its natural, rural beauty and the rich cultural tapestry of the area, which is evident amongst the ancient architecture of the abbeys, churches and castles. In the south, the economy is led by the manufacturing of cheese from sheep’s milk (Roquefort), which endures its maturing process within the limestone caves.

Rodez

Rodez is the capital of Aveyron, located in the middle of Aveyron. Due to its central location, it presents the perfect place to stay for those wishing to explore the neighbouring areas. Peering down over the river Aveyron, it also features a huge cathedral, Cathedrale Notre Dame, which was constructed from red sandstone in 1277 and represents the first building of the Gothic Era in the south of France. In-keeping with the nostalgic sense of the past that comes across instantly when visiting Aveyron, Rodez has two main squares in the centre of the town, Place du Bourg and Place de la Cite, which are joined together by a lattice of medieval streets and passageways.

Najac

Najac is a very small village that somehow manages to encompass two hills. It is essentially one street linking the hills to the valley with a line of very old but utterly charming houses. The local produce on offer includes not only the Roquefort cheese but also the red wine Marcillac. Also, due to its position, some incredible views of the nearby chateau ruins can be attained from here.

Roquefort

A name associated primarily with the famous blue cheese, Roquefort itself is actually a very modest and unassuming town. The cheese is made from ewes’ milk and is transported to the nearby caves at Roquefort-sur-Soulzon to mature in the naturally damp atmosphere. It is a small town but well-populated with adverts offering to take tourists on tours detailing the cheese-making process.

Other Attractions

Aside from walking and taking in the natural beauty of the area, The Micropolis at Saint Leons is a museum-based attraction detailing ‘insect life’. It is a fusion of museum and theme park and is interactive as well as educational, therefore a good choice for families. Also, the Millau Viaduct presents a quick, easy and inexpensive way to access other destinations such as Paris and Spain, and is in itself a highly impressive construction.
