Situated in the southwest of France, Ariege is in the Midi-Pyrenees region next to Andorra. Its tallest mountains are visible from as far as Toulouse on a clear day. Undoubtedly one of the regions of France least affected by tourism, it remains unspoiled with its people staying true to their cultural roots and local history. Its countryside is untamed and represents a natural, feral beauty that is not often found.
Foix
Foix is the capital of Ariege and although it is small in size, it is hugely charming. Surrounded by two rivers and the Foix castle on top of a colossal rock, it boasts an unusual and beautiful landscape. The castle itself acts as a museum, exhibiting accounts of its history and detailing local culture. History enthusiasts are encouraged to visit Foix during the summer, when the Medieval Fair takes place.
Another point of interest within Foix itself is the botanical garden, Les Epines de Lespinet, which features a wide range of plants and vegetation.
Things to do
Ariege is the perfect place for those who love to be outdoors. Donkey walking, climbing, white water rafting, skiing, fishing, swimming, biking and horse riding are just a few of the activities that are easily accessed.
There are two adventure parks; Horizon Vertical, an adventure course in Moulis and Acro’Lus, an acrobatic park set in the trees of Aulus-les-Bains.
Regarding hiking, Ariege is the walker’s paradise. Medieval routes through the mountains and valleys allow for stunning views and detours through unspoilt villages.
A total of ten ski stations will enable skiers of all abilities to be spoilt for choice. The Plateau de Beille is the largest in the Pyrenees and can offer snow until springtime.
Food
Famed for its cheese and meat, Ariege is the perfect place to indulge the taste-buds and try a little of everything. In addition to the traditional delicacies of its roots, visitors can also enjoy more unusual offerings such as donkey’s milk, ostrich meat and bison.
The perfect place to buy food and drink is at the weekly farmers’ market. Organic, home-grown products are readily available and visitors are encouraged to visit during the spring and autumn periods when there are less tourists and the social aspect of the market can really thrive.
